Sailboat racing in a regatta

Junior Racing Program (Ages 10-18)

Our Junior Racing Program is split into two groups. Learn to Race (LTR) and Advanced Racing Team (ART). The Learn to Race program prepares sailors for participating in club-level regattas. The Advanced Race Team travels to away regattas and clinics. Both groups sail after school or in the evenings. All sailors start out in the Learn to Race program before graduating to the Advanced Race Team program. Registration is for past Learn-to-Sail participants or by Permission of the Sailing Program Director only.

Online Registration

(Clicking “Online Registration” will take you to ClubSpot – a member management site – to complete your registration. You will be asked to create an account in order to manage multiple registrations and multiple participants.)

Practices are on Tuesdays OR Thursdays from 4:00 – 6:00 and one weekend day (varies due to race days) at Lake Julian. On Sunday evenings a decision will be made and sent via text message to sailors as to which day will be the “sailing day” and which day will be off-the-water learning and academic tutoring/homework help.

Since we have limited time on the water after school, practices will be no-nonsense and efficient. Sailors are expected on the water by 4:00 pm, off-the-water by 5:30 pm for derigging, and a de-brief with pickup at 6:00 pm.

The Junior Racing Team has four seasons:

  • Spring season: March – May ($185)
  • Summer Practices & Regattas: June – August ($285) Note: Most sailors work at Learn-to-Sail in exchange!
  • Fall Practices & Regattas: September – November ($185)
  • Winter season: December – February ($185)

Sailing Practices

All sailors are expected to rig (set up) and derig (take down) boats for practice. Sailing practices focus on team racing, strategic and tactical training, and physical fitness. Drills performed at practice will foster experience to properly prepare a sailor for regattas. Many practices will include mini-races to offer sailors the opportunity to try, fail and ultimately succeed at racing.

Since we have limited time on the water after school, practices will be no-nonsense and efficient. Sailors are expected on the water by 4:00 pm, off-the-water by 5:30 pm for derigging, and a de-brief with pickup at 6:00 pm.

Please see the Racing Team page for more information.

2021 Junior Open Sailing

Four weekly sessions of Junior Open Sailing, starting Mondays July 5, July 12, July 19, and July 26 from 1 pm – 5 pm. $100 a week. These sessions are for sailors who have sailed with Asheville Youth Sailing before. We’re happy to host weekly sessions of supervised sailing. Get out on the water, enjoy the sunshine, we’ll play (safe) games, do drills, race a little, and just sail around. Ages 10 -18 only.

Once you click HERE to register, you will be taken to Clubspot, our membership site. If you sailed with us last year, you will already have a login. Once there, choose your sessions and which boat you’d like to sail. We’ll collect your payment and your waivers. (Be sure to check your email after registration to click the waiver!)

Basically, you are chartering a boat to use by the week. You will use the same boat and equipment each day.

COVID -19 Disclaimer: US Sailing, Asheville Youth Sailing, and The Asheville Sailing Club recommend singlehanded sailing or family sailing during this pandemic. The safety and health of each member is the responsibility of the individual member. Sailing is a great way to get back together as a club and enjoy being on the water. We will monitor the situation daily and make appropriate changes as needed. Please note there will be no onsite registrations. Please make sure you register online with your correct email address, and phone numbers since notifications may be made as late as the day of the event. Parents need to be “on call” while their sailor is on the lake in case of inclement weather — including too much or too little wind, rain, and thunderstorms. We have no safe place to gather with access to the clubhouse limited to a few people at a time.

In the event of a resurgence of COVID-19 which causes us to cancel your session, or a documented or suspected case of COVID-19 in your household, all registration fees (minus the credit card charges) will be completely refunded.

2021 Junior Race Week

2021 Junior Race Week will happen at the end of summer, the week of August 23 – 27, after school. A guest coach will be on-board to beef up our racing skills and us get ready for middle and high school South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association junior series.

Reserve your place now with a $50 deposit! Final cost will be determined once we identify a clinician and know how many participants we have.

NOTE: You need approval from the Sailing Program Director or Coach to participate.
